Beta Hero’s They Do Exist Review 2: The Chase Brothers

Making Chase: Chase Brothers Book 4 and Giving Chase: Chase Brothers Book 1 are 2 of the 4 books written by Lauren Dane about the Chase brothers of Petal, Georgia. They are both beta heros, their other brothers, the 2nd oldest and the youngest, are the alpha males of the family oddly, but Matt and Kyle are beta’s because they are not aggressive, they are not in your face, making you do anything. Instead of confront, they think, sit back, take time and decide.

Kyle Chase is the oldest of the clan, yet he waited until his Sheriff brother Shane, had bruised the heart of maggie before making his move and making her his own. It takes a strong man to not be intimidated by dating a woman who once dated his brother. This is one of the reasons why Kyle is such a great Beta hero, he’s accepting of certain things, but he is also protective and un afraid to take reasonable chances for love and for his love.

When faced with uncertainty and problems, Kyle and Matt go off to think instead of react. Thats why they are great Beta hero’s, because they, instead of fighting and becoming aggressive. They are not weak, they are strategic. When Matt fought with Tate, instead of fighting with her, engaging her aggressive family, he retreated to a bar to think. When one of Tate’s brothers confronted him, instead of reacting, he refused to respond to him, refused to engage.

I’m not saying that Beta hero’s are more emotionally mature, but in what I’ve read so far, they seem to be. When you compare the 2 beta hero’s of Lauren Dane’s Chase Brothers, to the 2 alpha hero’s of the same series, the Beta hero’s seem to be more emotionally mature. A few examples:

1) When confronted in a Bar, the Beta hero Matt, refuses to fight and engage, choosing to keep his composure and go discuss it with the person with whom he had the problem instead of a very loud family member

2) When his love Maggie was being stalked instead of hauling off and trying to kill him, he chose to call the police (okay it was his brother the sheriff but whatever) he chose to handle it the “adult way”

3) When Shane’s girlfriend’s ex was threatening her, instead of being comforting and helping her, allowing her to feel how she wanted to feel and letting her decide wants to do, he gets angry, violent, wanting to run off and kill, maim, destroy, and completely disregards her feelings, and has to be reminded of what to do, by his mother.

SO those are just a few examples, but I honestly don’t have enough data to be able to say categorically that Beta hero’s are more emotionally mature than alpha hero’s.

Thoughts???
