Sweet As Sin by Inez Kelley

John Murphy is tormented by nightmares. A bestselling young-adult author, he writes the ultimate fantasy: stories where good always triumphs. He knows better. His past has shown him the worst in people—and in himself. When he moves next door to the sexy, vibrant Livvy—a woman completely unlike his usual one-night stands—he’s driven to explore every curve of her delicious body.

Pastry chef Livvy knows that giving in to the temptation that is John Murphy won’t lead to anything permanent, but she deserves a passionate summer fling. John discovers she’s as sweet as the confections she bakes while Livvy slowly unravels his secrets. But what will happen when she uncovers them all?

With all of the great reviews out there in the blogosphere about this book, I was prepared for one of 2 eventualities, either this book would completely blow my mind or it would be God-awful. It was neither. It was GENIUS.

First about the book. There’s a HUGE surprise in this book, there is a book within a book, the main character John is a writer, who is writing a YA book, that you get to read while reading the actual book, the romantic love story. So its like a 2-fer, 2 for the price of one really. Its really cool to read the YA book while reading the novel.

With that being said, I don’t think I’ve ever read another book with a tortured hero written so believably well.  John literally COMES ALIVE, he is human, he is tortured he is in pain, constant deep unending pain, and because we learn about it as Livvy learns about it, you feel the pain along with her, at learning what he has suffered. Its God-awful, literally. John is the most complex tortured pained man, who has learned to bury his emotions and his flashbacks and cut and run when the going gets tough. But unlike other torutured hero stories, the WAY he cuts and runs, WHY he runs, it makes perfect sense.

Livvy is a baker, whose life has been defined by one single instant when she learned that her father was not all knowing or the best man in the world.  She meets John and her world breathes. It expands. He is expanding, he’s exciting, he’s different and the  sex is, well I’ll just say, read in private. You will be flushed, you will be hot, you will be bothered. Thats enough.

The story is hyper intense, hyper complex, its what romance, new romance is supposed to be. Its NEW its fresh, it expands, its so beyond new, its freaking shiny. In the package wonderful. I loved it, I loved it I loved it. Its painful, its raw, its like a split lip that cracks when you smile, its painful and it hurts but it feels so damn good at the end. I’m gushing, I know but its, this story, without giving anything away is about growth, and getting past your past, accepting who you are so you can move into a future. Its brilliant, and bold. I haven’t been this excited about a book or an author in God knows how long. Its amazing, Carina Press has put out something that is so amazingly cool and new, it makes me super excited about the future of this press and the future of  e-publishing.

A’s. Straight freaking A’s.
