Six years ago, Alexis Baptiste’s world was turned upside down when Hunter Cassidy disappeared without a trace, leaving her alone and pregnant. She’s finally moving on with her life when he resurfaces, just in time to rescue her from a would-be assassin. Forced to join him on the run to protect herself and her young son, Alexis is now in even more danger: danger of falling for Hunter all over again.
Betrayed by rogue CIA agents after infiltrating an infamous drug cartel, former DEA agent Hunter Cassidy has spent years trying to clear his name. He’s not proud of the things he’s done, and knows he doesn’t deserve a future with Alexis, or the son he never knew he had, but he’s determined to protect them from the men who ruined his life. Convincing Alexis to trust him—and denying his feelings for her—is going to be the hardest mission he’s ever faced.
Dark, Gritty Dangerous, with the whole secret love child trope? **LOVES** What could be better than a novel with super danger, a secret love child, two competing loves, and assassins on their tails with possible death and destruction at every turn? Not a whole lot I’ll tell you that much. This was amazing.
Alexis was in love with Hunter 6 years ago when he dissapeared. For the last 6 years she has been putting her life together, with her son, whom Hunter doesn’t know exists. Hunter went deep undercover for the CIA only to find out that his handlers and the people he worked with were dirty. After being captured and held hostage for years, he manages to escape and works his way back to Alexis and his son, knowing they are on his trail and would use any weapon in their arsenal to get him to heel.
Fighting himself, the CIA and Alexis and her pull on him Hunter is trying to do the right thing, the good thing, and he is having a difficult time doing it. He still loves Alexis and she still loves him but she has moved on. Her new beau is perfect, except that he isn’t Hunter and they both know it. So they are fighting each other, trying to figure out how deep this betrayal of Hunters bosses goes, and trying to keep themselves alive all while introducing Alexis son to Hunter. Or rather introducing Hunters son to his father.
Its packed. I mean just to the brim with action. Its non stop. That creates several problems. One is that you never get as much romance as you want. there’s enough you just want more. And it also means you never get as much character development as you want either. Again there is enough but its not exactly what you want. Its not perfect and its not just full of everything you could imagine you would want of your characters given their relationship to each other and their forced relationship in the story. I wanted to see them had a deeper connection. You get that Hunter and Alexis are emotionally tied from their history, but there’s not a whole lot of getting to know you again once they are confronted with each other again. There is a lack of the re-establishing of trust and the reinforcing of the foundation of their love that was missing.
Granted this was supposed to be set in the fast paced I’m about to be killed world of assassins and the CIA so trust had to be established immediately but in those quiet in between moments I wanted to see more of an emotional reconnection.
Overall Rating: B-
