Review Enchanted Again by Robin D. Owens
Magic has a price—and for Amber Sarga it’s days and years off her life. Each curse she breaks ages her—and the bigger the curse the bigger the cost, and not only to her. That’s why she hides away and has vowed not to get involved again… That’s why she hates looking in a mirror…
And then an ill-fated stranger arrives. Rafe Davail doesn’t believe in curses—not even knowing that in his family every first son dies young. Amber offers guidance but she won’t break the curse. Still, as she grows closer to Rafe and discovers the secrets of their pasts, she wonders if for this time, this man, she should risk it all….
I got a third of the way into this and stopped. There’s several reasons but one main one. Or rather two. First, Amber is one of the most idiotically selfless characters I’ve ever read and it makes the book completely unbelievable. Second, Rafe and his cousins are complete assholes, well Rafe mainly his cousin is like Asshole lite, Diet Dick, and frankly their attitudes make you not want to help them at all. They are undeserving. On top of that, the elven, or Fae introcuction is weak and unexplained, the brownies while hilarious are completely unnecessary and only serve as a distraction from the fact that there is no visual plot. Or what plot there is, is a muddled, confusing mess.
I liked the idea that there was a curse lifter. I liked the idea that every time Amber lifted a curse she was then losing parts of her life and that her familiars died. Its like physics, no action without a reaction and I loved how that was addressed. I really liked the ideas behind it all, but it was the execution that killed the book for me.
