Review Whispers In The Dark (A KGI novel) by Maya Banks
She came to him when he needed her the most.
A realistic tale of torture, a soldiers struggle to stay alive to stay sane in the wake of horrific torture, not just of himself but also of his fellow soldiers, and the voice in the dark he’s not sure is real telling him that she’ll take his pain away. Anyone would think they were nuts, if all of a sudden they started hearing voices in their head, taking away their pain, but thats exactly what happened with Nathan.
Shea and her sister have been on the run since they were born, first seeing their parents gunned down in front of them, then knowing if they were less than hyper vigilant the mysterious governmental organization that has been hunting them will be on them and will use them for their nefarious purposes which include testing and repeated hardships? Who could withstand that kind of pressure.
When we meet Nathan after his family with Sheas help has rescued him. Even though he knows exactly what has happened and how he was helped by both Shea and his sister but he still cant believe it. He is having supreme difficulty readjusting to life without being able to reveal to his family how he was able to get out with help however he can’t see a way to explain to his family without sounding crazy.
What he ends up getting is a signal from Shea that she needs help. Out running her demons in the form of US government hit squads is getting way too difficult.
I loved LOVED Nathans vulnerability as well as his deep need to protect and the deep need to help this woman who help him survive. Nathan’s PTSD his inability to just survive and snap back is so honest and so wonderful. I loved reading an honest account of how difficult it is to readjust and return to normal life. Its rare that you get a true glimpse into how life works and how adjusting to life is difficult from an alpha male hero and its wonderful to read.
Shea is not at all concerned with herself, she doesn’t even consider herself valuable or of use to these government hit men, instead thinking they would use her to get to her sister, the one she considers valuable or of real worth because she can heal from a distance instead of making them impervious to pain. Her selflessness makes her such a great heroine, she is so nice, you believe her, believe in her and you want her to be helped or saved.
When in other books you might be annoyed with a heroine that is this nice and this selfless, she is written so well that you want her to be helped, you want her to be saved, you want her to be happy. Its the damnedest thing. If she was a real person, you’d want to hug her while you thought she wasn’t real. That no one could be that nice, no one could be that perfect.
As usual the action is exactly what you expect, its explosive, intense and simply amazing. The best parts of the book though, and in every Maya Banks books are the relationships, they are deep, wounded, they strip you naked, leave you bare, they’re super intense and emotional, they are the kinds of relationships with your partner, your friends, your family, you wish you could have, the kind that are forged with years of shared experiences and thousands of hours.
The relationship between Nathan and Shea is quick yes, but given how she writes their encounters, their connection, their love, its believable. Its honest, its amazing. Its wonderful, I loved their honesty, their vulnerability, their openness and how much they just loved and enjoyed one another.
Just amazing. Amazing. Read this book.
Overall Rating: A+
