Review The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa

My name—my True Name—is Ashallayn’darkmyr Tallyn.

I am the last remaining son of Mab, Queen of the Unseelie Court. And I am dead to her.

My fall began, as many stories do, with a girl…

The end of the Iron Fey series had to be amazing. And it had to be focused on Ash becoming the man that he needed to be in order to in our eyes, the reader, worthy of Meghan Chase, the new Iron Queen. This had to be his journey, to find out who he really was, or could be, or had the ability to become. He had to become separate from Meghan, because for the entire series, we’ve seen him helping Meghan, with Meghan, his entire world has been surrounded by Meghan the entire time we’ve seen him, we needed to see Ash without the filter of Meghan and her thoughts and emotions.

This was Ash’s old fashioned journey to the end of the world, his world tour, to find a way to be able to withstand the Iron realm so he could go to Meghan. Through the novel we see him confront his past, confront himself, push himself beyond even what he thought was possible for himself. This was his journey, his path to win, die trying or prove himself unworthy of Meghan by giving up. I loved this tale. It was like an archetypal journey of a man through the hell of his own mind, though in this case it was an actual journey through hell with the major players in Ash’s guilt ridden conscience.

I was heartbroken majorly through the novel. The reappearance of Ash’s first love, the person he and Puck became mortal enemies over, the cause and start of his hope and the reason for his massive amounts of guilt. I was simply stunned when she reappeared. And I was crying when Ash had to make some of the worst decisions a man can make.

I was so glad for this journeyman’s tale. It truly gave me the insight into Ash that I wanted and needed, and it was the closure that was necessary for lovers of this series to feel like they’d gotten everything the wanted from Ms. Kagawa. She has given this as a gift to her readers, which is in making us loyal readers exceedingly happy.
